This makes eating the ube products from Trader Joe’s a bit more interesting. 🥚 Balut: Fertilized Duck Eggs and Their Role in Filipino Culture by Margaret Magat — This is the most comprehensive read I’ve seen on balut. This in-depth paper connects the symbolic and material explanations on why people consume developing duck eggs. Personally, I enjoy the balut “soup” the most, then the yolk. But just those two. Take a read and let me know what you think. 🤏 A Heritage of Smallness by Nick Joaquin — This is a scathing essay written by novelist, poet, and National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin way back in 1966. He points to the Filipino’s sense of smallness in commerce, governance, and culture which have held us back from achieving big goals. Do you think the points he raised are still true today? 🦸♂️Rizal Without the Overcoat by Ambeth Ocampo — To celebrate Jose Rizal’s birthday, here’s a talk by Ambeth where he presents the human, more relatable, side of Jose Rizal. His class is one of the best history classes I’ve ever had, and it’s great that videos of his lectures are now available online so more people can see them.
